I rode through Missouri last week past Waynesville and Ft. Leonard Wood. First time I've been through there since 1976.
Not so lost in the woods anymore. Brought back lots of memories.

To Ken;
I was in 547th bn-529th plt at Kelly Brks.
It would have been easy to have fun drinking, etc. back then.
WE are now Vets from that time. You have found some of our benefits-buy that house you're dreaming about with the GI bill benefits!
You earned these benefits.Take advantage of being a Veteran!Sounds like you have a good new start.
It must have been some time pedaling to Florida! Not many of us did that.
When buying that house, check out "REO" bank owned. You could get more for less money. There are opportunities everywhere-North Carolina in mtns;etc.Watch out for middle of NC,water might be bad!
Live day to day best you can-watch sunrise&sets, see all around you that you did not see before.Be a
proud VET-have a good Memorial Day-We earned it,one way or another.

Hello All,

Been a very long time since I have posted here and wanted to give an update along with a request.
Just about to rejoin society after being homeless for the last three years. Wouldn't wish that ordeal upon your worst enemy. After arriving in Florida on a recumbent tricycle (pedal) I went to the local VA and asked for help with my lifelong addictions and being homeless. Got the help I needed at the Pensacola, FL VA Mental Health though the medical seemed to take an act of Congress to get in. After a six month stay at a men's drug and alcohol recovery house, I was fortunate to be accepted into the Volunteers Of America-Florida Homeless Veterans Grant Per Diem Transitory Housing. It is a 2 year program that provides intensive counseling and housing for homeless veterans to get us off the streets.
I'll be leaving here on the first of June hoping to purchase a house somewhere. And there lies the request: After losing everything and I mean everything, I have no artifacts from the past. If anyone would be able to share copies of photographs and/or other things, it would be greatly appreciated.

(1457) William Edward Leach

U.S. Veteran
WILLIAMSBURG

CSM (RET) WILLIAM E. "SPEEDY" LEACH

On Friday, November 2, 2007, God saw the road was getting rough, and the road of life had become too hard to travel. He gently closed the eyes of our beloved brother and uncle, CSM (Ret) William E. Leach, and whispered “Peace be Thine". William Leach, 70, a resident of York County for the past year and a half, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 2, 2007.

William E. "Speedy" Leach was born June 5, 1937 in Rowland, North Carolina, to the late William Ernest and Martha Leach. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Wilbur Leach, and Ralph D. Leach, and a sister, Ernestine Leach Miles. In May 1954, William graduated from Southside High School, Rowland, NC and in June 1954, he joined the United States Army.

R.I.P. BIG WILL. Funny he never told us his nick name was "speedy". Fridays after work E.M. club NCO's, any one else remember that? Good times!!

Jim Cauthron Tuesday, April 14, 2015 07:02 PM
I remember the day he pinned on ISG stripes. Paul said something smartassed and big Will told him that diamonds is trump. He was a good man. He treated everyone fairly. The last time I saw him was at Belvoir when he was CSM of MRDC. And yes I still treasure the NCO calls at the victory club on friday nights. How many of you received calls to bring home bread?

Hi there. I was a 12E20, SP5 in the 567th at Kelley Barracks, Darmstadt. Early '69 to May '70. 1st Platoon, Team 3. TC was Marks. I think the CO was Weber, but I'm hazy on that. I do know the 1SG was Leach, now deceased. I only remember a couple of other names. It's hell to get old.

chuck B. Sunday, April 12, 2015 09:21 AM
William E. Leach, August 1980 – September 1984

CSM William E. Leach, a native of North Carolina, entered the U.S. Army in July 1954. Before his appointment as the Corps’ first Command Sergeant Major in August 1980, he served as the Command Sergeant Major of the 2d Engineer Battalion, 2d Infantry Division; the U.S. Army Mobility Research and Development Command; and the 1st Battalion of the U.S. Army Transportation School Brigade. Duty stations in the United States included Camp Wolters, Texas; Fort Eustis, Virginia; and Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Overseas tours of duty included Germany, Korea, and Vietnam.
Don't know how old he would be but based on enlisting 1954 he would be up there. Never heard if he passed or not but he was one GOOD 1SG& CSM.

Richard Stolz Friday, April 17, 2015 07:47 AM
I was there during the same dates. Weber was the CO. I remember Marks. I remember standing while Leach received all the Vietnam medals. I was friends with Aloia, Tracy, Aspiazu.

Walt Ringler Friday, May 8, 2015 08:57 AM
My room mate was Stanley Vaughan, but I mostly hung out (drank) with Tim Loos. I remember your name as well as Aloia and Tracy.

Jay Popiel Sunday, June 7, 2015 02:35 PM
Hello 567Engr people. If you remember Cpt Weber, then I hope you will remember me too. Cpt Popiel.

Walt Ringler Thursday, June 11, 2015 06:43 PM
Jay: I do remember you. As I recall, you were plt leader of what became 2nd plt. I can't recall the name of the 1st plt leader. You guys were Lts at the time. He broke out laughing when he read my orders for the Good Conduct Medal. Can't imagine why. Ssg Salas was 1st plt sgt. My TC was Wayne Marks and I was the SS tech.

Richard Stolz Monday, December 7, 2015 09:07 AM
Walt, I remember you, Vaughan, and Loos. Also Lt. Popiel. I was there spring of 69 to fall of 70. I remember Leach trying to have me get Sp5 but he did not know that I did not want it. I was concerned that a Sp5 would become mission essential and then not eligible for early out. I did frustrate Leach by answering questions wrong that he knew I was aware of the right answers.

C. Fox Friday, March 25, 2016 04:03 PM
SP5 Fox- I took over as compamy clerk in April 70-only because raised my hand and asked if anyone could type. My year with the 299th in Nam didnt count for much but got to work with CSM Leach for almost 2 years-also CPT Weber-CPT Popiel-good times were had by all. think even LTC Nack (Btl commander of 547th) was a little itimidated by Leach.

Jay Popiel Sunday, September 18, 2016 06:53 PM

It's nice that you're still having reunions, that's special. Some organizations have stopped having them, some reasons being the remaining veterans are too old.

But not our generation, right? Technically no, but there isn't any more 12E MOS's, is there? You people are the last of them, and when you age and retire, there won't be any more.

The last WW I veteran died not too many years ago, and I can remember when the last Civil War veteran died. But who'd have thought there'd be any comment about when the last 12E passed on? Never heard about that anywhere, nor should I expect to, I guess.

Can't say it enough, but thank you. Your group and what you did make you all museum pieces yourselves. I doubt that anyone will ever know about it but you.
